Deterrence or rational choice, which one is the better, or should I say wiser theory to follow when it comes to the criminal justice system and crime prevention. Using extreme capacitation (Deterrence) can be an effective punishment for many in our society, however, there will still be a small portion of our society that will still commit crimes. The majority of the society would use good-ole common sense (Rational Choice) and not commit crimes in the first place. DISCUSSION: Deterrence and Rational Choice are two theories that our criminal justice system has been in place to prevent criminals from committing crimes. Of the many types of deterrence that is available to use that displays our societies consequences, we are going to look at†¦show more content†¦Typically, we find that punishment has minimal effect on some offenders’ behavior (when the difference of incapacitation or incarceration is a few years) or that the crime will relocate to another location to lessen the chances of being detected. Specific deterrence is projected to communicate to criminals of every kind, the mistakes that have been made, and hopefully this will keep them from committing future crimes by viewing the values of their actions. This viewing (Rational Choice) should make the offender aware of what it is that they could lose should they continue to offend. Having the freedom to go to the movies, concerts and even the mall, or holding your loved ones when you want. Not having to attend a funeral in shackles and handcuffs can mean so much to a man/woman. These are just some of the consequences of ones’ actions and reasons not to re-offend. According to the video â€Å"formal CJ sanctions influence behavior and may prevent crime† (Slide 7). These are some forms informal sanctions. Both general and specific deterrence objectives is to completely stop crime, however difficult it may be. STRENGTH Some strength of rational choice, the ability to view/recognize the things that are important to you i.e. family, friends. Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde consists of reputation, good vs. evil and damage control. In other words, Utterson tirelessly works to prevent his good friend Dr. Jekyll from being dragged into the horrid affairs of Mr. Hyde, and Dr. Jekyll goes to the greatest of lengths to prevent his Hyde identity from being discovered, in order to avoid anyone knowing of his somewhat questionable scientific work and morally despicable behavior. Much of the novel is based on the characters reputations and how they have to maintain a good public image, as they are upper class people. In pursuing his scientific experiments and validating his work, Jekyll claims, man is not truly one, but truly two. So, in Jekylls view, every soul contains elements of both good and evil, but one is always dominant. In Jekylls case, his good side is dominant, but he knows there is evil inside of him, but at the end of the book his evil side becomes stronger and unstoppable. However, as a respectable member of society and an honorable Victorian gentleman, Jekyll cannot fulfill his evil desires. Thus, he works to develop a way to separate the two parts of his soul and free his evil characteristics. Unfortunately, rather than separating these forces of good and evil, Jekylls potion only allows his purely evil side to gain strength. Jekyll is in fact a combination of good and evil, but Hyde is only pure evil, so there is never a way to strengthen or separate Jekylls pure goodness. Without counterbalancing his evil identity, Jekyll allows Hyde to grow increasingly strong, and eventually take over entirely, perhaps entirely destroying all the pure goodness Jekyll ever had. Deja Vu and Source Code Comparison Essay I watched the two movies: Deja Vu and Source Code. In this essay, I will compare the similarities and differences in the two movie plots. Both are about men who find themselves in a situation where they must travel back to a specific window of time to attempt to prevent a catastrophic event. Both, in the process of completing their mission, fell in love with a woman fated to be killed if they failed. So, these stories seem very similar, however, there are many differences within the two movies which I will explore in the following paragraphs. In the Source Code Colter Stevens is sent to an eight minute time period to find the bomber on a train. He would be sent back to this eight minute period as an entirely different person (being injected into this persons consciousness). Every time at the end of the eight minute mark he would die and be sent back to a pod. Inside the pod he talks to Goodwin who talks with Stevens when in his alternate reality state. Colter Stevens real body consists of only the upper half, due to an accident on a mission in Afghanistan which made him the perfect candidate for the job. So in this movie the way he travels time is by superimposing his consciousness in time. In deja vu Doug Carlin an ATF agent solves the terrorist attack (A bomb was set off on a boat full of children, women and soldiers who had gotten home from war) by getting the opportunity to join a secret team that has new technology called Snow White ? allowing the controller to go exactly 4 ? days in the past allowing the controller to capture 360 degree everywhere 4 ? days in the past. After they witness the murder of Doug Carlins old friend that also worked for ATF, Doug goes back in time to fix the past and change the future by sending himself through a portal of some sort. So theyre similar in that they both have set periods they go back in time to, however, their methods are very different. Source Code and Deja Vu both have their main character fall in love. In Source Code, Colter Stevens successfully completes his mission while falling for a girl he doesnt know though he gets to know her through repeating the 8 minutes again and again. t one point after being placed on the train again, he tried leaving the train and getting off at the first stop. Stevens tried to see if he could run away with the woman, but to no success. In Deja Vu, Doug Carlin falls in love with a girl that was used as a lead towards the beginning. At the end of the movie Carlin gets into the teleporter planning on changing the past himself. He then gets to live while able to love someone. Even though they both fell in love the difference is that in Deja Vu the guy gets the girl at the end, and in the Source Code, Stevens dies at the hand of his handler, Goodwin, in what is best described as a fit of mercy. They had formed a relationship, and it broke her heart to know he would never be with the woman he loved, for many reasons. In both Source Code and Deja Vu the main characters completed their mission(s) and successfully traveled in time. However, in Source Code Stevens is in an alternate reality and is put into another persons body. Stevens travels to an exact period in time and can restart, whereas in Deja Vu if Doug fails he wouldnt have a second chance. The main character in Deja Vu Doug Carlin teleports back in time to save 300+ lives. In doing so he sacrifices himself, though the real Doug Carlin is alive. Both movies were very intriguing, though I found that there are more differences than similarities between the two. Time travel has always been a mystery for everyone and it intrigues our minds to expand out of this world.
